Discussion: Assignment 1 - '2001: A Space Odyssey' by Stanley Kubrick.

W

(1) Who is the intended audience of the text?
This movie will attract those viewers who want to indeed understand the things had gone beyond by past human beings and concern about the planet and problems that evolution of humanity brings about. The creativity of the director had bring out the message through earlier life of human in filmmaking. It seriously will attract viewers would need the knowledge of alchemy, astronomy, anthropology and the true history of the human race before they final transformation of the human species.

(2) What is the intended message?
The intended message in this movie, I believe that this film offers a wide range of message for understanding. It let us to know how human beings look like and what had happen in their early life when they went through. I remember in the scene of 00:14:52 onward, the “avatar” start to discover that the bone can be used as a weapon for defendant/protection and a tool for them to kill/hunt prey for food. The next morning, they reclaim control of the water hole from the other tribe by killing another avatar. We can see that the avatar who killed had become the leader and he throws his weapon-tool into the air, switching via match cut from a bone to an orbital satellite millions of years in the future. In this scene, it told us that they become smarter to hunt for their food for living and the way they become stronger to fight against each others as protection and site. Indeed, it was a simply movie and not much conversation between each character but they bring out some of the meaning in the theory of C.S Pierce's classification of sign - index. As I had comment about the previous post, index is a statistical devise which summarizes a collection of story. They use this theory to bring out the meaning as it was a work of art movie as will let viewer have their own interpretation of the experience to understand it.

(3) What cultural assumptions, or codes, are called upon to read this text?
In this movie, it was an award science-fiction films for visual effects exclusively. One of the main thing is the "avatar" proves this point. However, Kubrick's "Space Odyssey" is not only about visual effects. The movie dwells on eternal concern about the future of our planet, and problems that evolution of humanity brings about. Apart from stunning visual effects, this film is an exceptional atmosphere which can be compared only to Luc Besson's "Fifth Element", which testifies that Kubrick was ahead of his time with this movie.

(4) What background information is important to read this text?
This was a great story of evolution that does interest a viewer in a new perception of the concept "evolution" and I believe that every shot has a meaning that the director is attempting to convey. This movie is mostly deals with thematic elements of human evolution, technology, artificial intelligence, and extraterrestrial life. In the scene of 00:18:12, after the “avatar” had hit down another side of “avatar”, it was a symbol to prove that the strongest side will always get the benefit and power which also represent the society we are living now. Besides, the "avatar" also show as icon in this movie. As they represent the important of status in the society. Other than that, it jump to another scene of spaceship and planet which switching via match cut from a bone to an orbital satellite millions of years in the future and the smoothness of movement between the bone and satellite. In this scene, it show the planet and spaceship was a semiotic sign to represent as a language to tell viewers we will ability to have such high technology research in may be in our hundred or million years into the future.

(5) What sort of reality does the text construct and how does it do it?
May be the director choose it was a landmark for viewers to know about the exploration of the unknown with their imagination and understanding. From the beginning of the film there is like a magic moment happen. Whole group of “avatar” discover a big “sign” in their place and they scream and yell like crazy for a moment. One of the brave “avatar” try and touch it, to see whether what is that actually. Finally they went near the big “sign” and they look up. The scene came to solar and lunar eclipses appear. It sound like they are telling us a complex story line will happen on next. It look so dramatic and it seen like happen in a magic moment when both of solar and lunar eclipses appear. May be the director want to tell viewers something amazing is about to happen. I believe the film itself that is being conjured by the magical alignment. Every time 2001 is shown - this lunar eclipse precedes it - like an astrological, celestial marker.

(6) How far does the text reflect or depart from dominant cultural values?
"2001: A Space Odyssey" is the film of the process of science-fiction film. It is a film in which the force of science is the protagonist. It is this force’s point-of-view depicted most often by the camera’s eye, which we had previously mistaken as impartial and reportorial. With each of the film scene, civilization progresses toward greater order and intelligence and this evolution is further marked by a literal revolution: bone and satellite.

(7) What are alternate readings?
In this film, it content the view of human history and possible meaning of the universe. I prefer the fact that they take this complexity seriously and had made such film about the possibility of intelligent life other than humans in the universe. Besides, I seriously understand the cultural and social shock of new discoveries of reality and how those have an effect on human understanding and culture.

(8) Has this text been read extensively outside the intended audience? If so, does this reading differ, and why?
As I said it was a science-fiction film. If you seen the film, you will seriously transformed in it. The special effects of space ships looks beautiful and with the audio. The special effects are actually hold up to the scrutiny of the detail provided by a blu-ray presentation and the movie are shown up in a simply smooth way. By the way, the movie are presented in quite different technique if compare with others movie. For example, it combines with the different story with one movie of the things had gone beyond by past human beings and concern about what will happen on the planet after few hundred or million years.

(9) What texts have influenced this text, and what texts have been influenced by this text?
In this movie, the dialog is pretty sparse, that why sound are very important in it. From our lecturer notes, it same meaning as of semiotic. From the note, it state "Communication does not consist of the transmission of meanings, but of the transmission of messages". Meaning are not only in the message which mean words do not mean at all; only people mean it. The background music, which consists mostly of classical music that makes the space sequences seem almost like a ballet, sounds beautiful. The intense breathing that we hear while the characters are in the space suits is presented perfectly and really adds to the suspenseful feelings of those scenes. In the early scene while the whole group of “avatar discover the big “sign”, the audio/music may not sound very pleasant but it was nice to see how well it was presented on the scene and it make people feel more nervous. As we can see, the sound of breathing is the signifier of life. From the movie, the signifier of life are taken the form of words, images, sounds, acts or objects from the scene, but such things have no intrinsic meaning and become signs only when we invest them with meaning.

(10) How did, or will this text’s meaning change over time?
For me, the meaning of the text will not change over time due because it was a science fiction film that even after 40 years does not seem dated. By only showing representations of alien life and humanities next stage in evolution the movie manages to avoid a lot of the things that makes a sci-fi film seem cheesy when watching it years after it was made. Even though we are now few years passed the date in the title, 2001 still manages to be one of the most realistic interpretations of the future that has ever been put on film.

(11) What is the influence of this text on reality or humanity?
In this film, I know it certainly isn't a movie for everyone. For me it develop a good feeling for me and what the actual content it want to shown. It was a slow movie and it made me manage to be a patient on where humanity has been and where it is going and it will definitely leave with something to think about. Indeed, I believe there may be some hidden message and it depend on who discover and understand it.

(12) How does this text relate to your own values?
In this movie, the film where less dialogue and are minimal as special effects are in charge of creating the necessary impression, however it still manages to deal with important moral and ethical values. Through this film, I believe an idea is an artificial intellect that control overall human mind and attitude. I believe it do connect with the C.S Pierce theory-icon,index and symbols in most of the part in this film as to bring out the important message for viewers. For example, from the act of the "avatar", it clearly represent the life style of our society on how we grow up and get strong in future life and can be believe that people can easily guided or control by a desire or to be in control of others.
